Homemakers told about need for three-day emergency kit

At the October meeting of the Tignall Homemakers Club, the beautiful state flowers quilt was on display. It is now at the Tignall branch of the Farmers and Merchants Bank.

If you liked the 2005 state birds quilt, you will love this one, so do stop by to see it. Tickets for the quilt raffle, $1 each or six for $5.00, may be obtained at the bank, at the Kum Bak Café, or from members. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Tignall Fall Festival on Saturday, November 4.

The program for the meeting was a talk by Washington Fire Chief and Wilkes County Emergency Management Agency Director Alan Poss on preparedness for disasters, especially those with natural causes.

He emphasized the need for an emergency kit including food and water for at least three days in case of extreme weather conditions such as an ice storm, tornado, or hurricane, causing power outages.

Every household should also have a weather radio, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detector. Any power outage should be reported at once via the appropriate phone number, but not by calling 911 which should be reserved for real emergencies such as those depending on a supply of oxygen.

The club welcomed visits from Beverly Johnson, Sarah Frances Henderson, and JoAnn Bailey.

Officers for 2007 were elected as follows: Pat Mack, president; Sally Kennedy, vice-president; Linda Burns, treasurer; Joan Baker, secretary; Edna Lamar, devotionals; and Jane Roberson, Sunshine Lady.

The club adjourned to enjoy delicious refreshments served by Pat Mack and Linda Burns.
