Cross Country runners win at home, prepare for region

In two recent Cross Country meets, W-W runners were among the top competitors with the boys team winning one event and showing strong in another as they prepare for the last meet of the regular season and for region and state meets early next month. Highlights and individual results of two meets, as reported by head coach Steve Echols, are recorded below.

October 11 at W-W

The Washington-Wilkes Tigers hosted a six-team meet on the W-W campus Wednesday, October 11. Teams participating in addition to the Tigers included Cedar Shoals, Madison County, Georgia Military College, Taliaferro County, and Prince Avenue.

There were 30 runners in the girls' race. Eighth grader Dixie Lee Trim ran a time of 24:02 and would have finished third overall against the high school runners. Middle school runner's times do not count towards determining the team scores for high school competition. Angle Broome, also an eighth grader, ran a time of 33:14.

There were approximately 55 runners in the boys' race. Ian Coe led the Tigers by winning the race in a time of 17:38 over the 3.1-mile course. Taylor Echols was fifth at 19:27, James Cade was 12th at 20:05, Tyson Gilland was 13th at 20:07, and Evan Harrison was 16th at 20:38.

Those five runners gave the Tigers a team score of 47 and captured first place in the team competition. Cedar Shoals was second with 63 points, Prince Avenue was third with 64 points, Taliaferro County was fourth with 76 points, and Madison County was fifth with 107 points. Other Tiger runners included Jacob Davis who was 17th with a time of 20:39, John Lovvorn was 19th at 20:50, Brantley Stevens was 21st at 21:20, Jesse Crago was 31st at 23:01, Josh Cosby was 38th at 24:14, and Rodrigo Rodriquez was 39th at 24:29. W-WMS runners included Tyler Stasyshyn, John Pope, Josh McLeroy, Blake Amis, and Rob Lovvorn.

Oct. 16 at Oglethorpe County

The Tiger Cross-Country teams traveled to Oglethorpe County on October 16 for a 12-team meet that included: Oglethorpe County, Rabun County, Dawson County, Morgan County, Union County, WW, Elbert County, Athens Academy, Prince Avenue, Banks County, Cedar Shoals, and North Oconee. Varsity teams were only allowed seven runners in the varsity race with the other runners participating in a BTeam/ JV race.

In the girls' varsity race, Ricola Patterson finished 50th out of 80 runners. She posted a time of 26:36 over the 3.1-mile course. This was an improvement of two minutes and 20 seconds over her time on the same course in a September meet.

The boys' varsity race included 84 runners. The Tigers were led by Ian Coe who finished 6th with a time of 17:31, Taylor Echols was 33rd at 19:10, James Cade was 46th at 19:50, Jacob Davis was 47th at 19:53, Tyson Gilland was 54th at 20:10. The team score, 186, based on these five runners' finishing positions put the Tigers at seventh in the team competition. Also running in the varsity race were John Lovvorn who finished 57th at 20:26 and Evan Harrison who finished 58th at 20:27.

In the boys' JV race, Brantley Stevens finished 18th with a time of 21:07, Jesse Crago was 23rd at 21:38, Ryen Scarboro was 24th at 21:41, Rodrigo Rodriquez was 57th at 23:50, and Josh Cosby was 60th at 24:18. There were approximately 80 runners in the JV race.

Upcoming meets The Tigers hosted a meet on the W-W campus Wednesday, October 25, but results were incomplete before the printing of this edition.

The teams will travel back to Oglethorpe County for the Region 8-AA meet on Saturday, November 4. The top four teams at the Region

meet will qualify to run at the State Class AA Meet in Carrollton on November 11. The top 6 individual runners at the Region Meet also qualify to run at the State Meet, even if their team does not qualify.
