Wilkes County history plates on display Sunday afternoon

Rosemary T. Hopkins invites all interested persons to come "Sip and See" her just-arrived Wilkes County history plates produced by Chown China Company in England.

The plates will be displayed in an elegant table setting at The Rider House, 109 Court Street, Sunday afternoon, November 19, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

There are 16 plates in the series, all personally designed by Mrs. Hopkins for the dinner-sized plates made of fine bone china. The plates are microwave friendly and are dishwasher proof.

On the border of each of the 16 plates is a sketch of cotton, peaches, Cherokee roses, and the needles of the famous Georgia longleaf pine.

The Wilkes County seal appears at the bottom and the Georgia Coat of Arms is at the top of each plated. Placed in the four cartouches bordering each plate are historic events of Wilkes County, including President Jefferson Davis' Farewell, the Confederate Gold Robbery, The Stagecoach of 1818, and the Battle of Kettle Creek.

The center of each plate features an historic landmark of the county. These are the Wilkes County Courthouse, the Washington Historical Museum, Callaway Plantation, the Robert Toombs House, the Mary Willis Library, the Masonic Lodge, Washington General Hospital, Washington-Wilkes public schools, the Bank of the State of Georgia, the Woman's Club, the Fitzpatrick Hotel, the Old Jail, and homes of Wilkes County.

Many of the churches in the county are included as well as some great Wilkes Countians.

On the back of each plate is a description of that plate's center sketch.

The plates will be on sale Sunday at The Rider House and will then be available at Bee Southern and Tena's Gift and Jewelry in Downtown Washington.

Parking at The Rider House is across the street; down Cheney Parkway; and in the parking lot behind the courthouse. The rear door of the house is handicap accessible.
