John Pope (left) and Hayley Colvard were selected to participate in the Tenth District Honor Band in February of 2007. John Pope and Hayley Colvard earned spots in the Tenth District Honor Band at auditions held Saturday, December 2, in Augusta. In all, eight Washington-Wilkes Middle School students participated in the auditions where they were required to perform five scales from memory and sight-read a piece of music.

John Pope was one of only two tenor saxophones chosen and he was selected as first chair tenor saxophone for the entire district. There

were 66 saxophones that auditioned for the band, 10 of which were tenors.

The district accepts 14 trumpets and Hayley Colvard made 13thchair trumpet in the band. There were 85 trumpets that auditioned for the band and the competition was fierce, according to W-WMS band director Jeff Thomas.

These two students will spend three days in February participating in the district honor band in Augusta.
