Second hand dogs
Our Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter has all kinds of dogs, large, small, purebred, mutt, old, young.
They are waiting for an opportunity to show how much they can give. They know what you do for them, and will give a lifetime of love and appreciation in return.
These are happy, healthy, wonderful dogs, spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, waiting for happy homes.
Here are some guides to help with adopting a dog:
Make a list of what you are looking for - calm, active, other qualities. Discuss adoption plans with all family members.
Visit the shelter repeatedly if need be. Take your time. This is a longtime commitment.
The shelter manager or volunteers are happy to help you find the right match.
Don't judge too quickly. Some barking or hyperactivity will diminish when the dogs are not overwhelmed. Don't pick a dog just based on appearance. Choose a personality that matches your life.
Have everyone in your family meet your dog. Have a stress-free adoption day, get to know your dog.
Have house rules, be patient, consistent, and always praise good behavior. It may take an adopted dog time to relax and blossom in the new home.
Save a life and enjoy your new companion.
