DAR members hear program on Betsy Ross, original flag
Nina Albea dressed as Betsy Ross (left) displays a copy of the original flag sewn by Betsy Ross. Assisting her are Jane Burton (center) and Ann Pinson. Mrs. Lawrence Pinson was program chairman for the meeting of the Kettle Creek Chapter NSDAR on Monday, November 20, at the Washington Woman's Club.
Mrs. Pinson narrated the program on Betsy Ross and was assisted by Mrs. Wyatt Albea, dressed as Betsy, and Mrs. James Burton, who portrayed Betsy's friend, Sarah. Among the items of interest displayed was a copy of the original flag commissioned by George Washington that was sewn by Betsy.
Prior to her program Mrs. Marvin McAvoy, co-regent, presided.
Hostesses were Mrs. William Gunter, Mrs. Addison Burt, Mrs. Brian Henderson, Mrs. Jerry Robinson, Mrs. George Thorpe and Miss Betty Slaton.
After the program Mrs. John Keen gave the National Defense message.
After other routine business, Mrs. Joe Roberson read the American Indian Minute. Mrs. Albea reported on the Kate Duncan Smith School. She also reported on delivering 80 pounds of clothing and 100 soup labels. She stressed the need for members to continue collecting these items in support of the school. A special collection will be taken at the December meeting for children who have no home to go to at Christmas.
Mrs. George Faz reported on the Kettle Creek Battlefield site, sharing photos of recent improvements. Mrs. Faz continues to work with county officials to complete the project.
Mrs. Melvin Kopecky, DAR Service of Veterans chairman, received gifts to be delivered to the veterans within the next few weeks.
Constitution Week chairman, Mrs. Mickey Sisson read a Constitutional Sidelight.
