Cullars Jr. arraigned in Federal court

Nathaniel Cullars Jr. is in custody of U.S. Marshals now after his recent arraignment in U.S. District Court in Augusta.

He was transferred to Federal custody July 31, Wilkes County chief deputy Mike Sisson said.

Cullars was arraigned August 1 in U.S. District Court in Augusta on one count of possession of cocaine base with intent to distribute. The Federal Grand Jury charged that "on or about June 6, 2006," Nathaniel Cullars Jr. "did knowingly and intentionally possess with intent to distribute over 5 grams of cocaine base."

Washington Police arrested Cullars after he was stopped for loud music at Lincoln Drive and Jackson Street in the Whitehall community about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 6.

Washington Police Corporal Jamie Bridges and Senior Patrolman Gene Norman conducted a search and found a large piece of crack cocaine and other drug paraphernalia in the car, and placed Cullars and Marion Hampton, 40, under arrest. Hampton was released the next day.

The investigation was turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, partly due to the involvement during the arrest of Cullars' father, Washington City Councilman Nathaniel Cullars Sr. Public calls for Cullars Sr. to step down from his Police Committee position until the matter is cleared up have been rejected by both Cullars and Mayor Willie Burns, who makes the committee appointments.

Cullars' defense attorney, M.V. Booker, has until August 15 to file motions before going to trial.

Cullars is still in Federal custody, held on $30,000 bond.
