Wilkes scholars honored by historic foundation
The Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation honored two Wilkes County scholars at their quarterly meeting Sunday at the Robert Toombs State Historic Site. Blake Stitcher (l) and Jenny Lindsey received $1,000 scholarship checks from board member Gary Norman. Stitcher will study at Augusta State to teach history, while Lindsey is a junior at Savannah College of Art and Design majoring in Historic Preservation. The scholarships were given in memory of Robert Leavell and Russell Slaton with family members Carroll Leavell and Betty Slaton and Marion Slaton in attendance. The guest speaker was Dr. Walter R. Andrae of Augusta, an authority on the Revolutionary War battle and its tactics.
