Tom Watson Watermelon Festival set for this Saturday in Thomson

Two days and counting until the third Annual Tom Watson Watermelon Festival in historic Thomson, Georgia. This Saturday, August 12, is the day and this year's festival is bigger and better than ever, according to curator Michelle Zupan. "It's family fun for everyone!" she said and provided the following sample of the day's events.

Tom Watson Watermelon growing contest - top prize $300 cash for the biggest Watson variety melon.

Watermelon Waddle - put your running shoes on for our 2-mile run/ walk through historic Thomson - the run begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Thomson Depot, 111 Railroad St. Register by calling 706-595-8886.

Watermelon Recipe Contest - get out your wooden spoon and whip up a winner!

Watermelon Carving contest - can you carve a melon to look like Elvis, how about SpongeBob? Well, bring it out and win a prize!

Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest - how often do you win a prize for your spitting skills?

Greased Watermelon 3-legged race - it's tougher than it sounds.

Watermelon Shot-put - not yet an Olympic event, but you better practice anyway.

Arts & Crafts vendors, food vendors, historical re-enactors, and hands-on educational displays, including the U.S. Army Signal Corps Museum, the Morris Museum of Art, and the Savannah River Ecology Lab.

And plenty of free ice-cold watermelon!
