Anderson, Lamar attend Pilot International Annual Convention in Atlanta July 19-22
In addition to business meetings and workshops, many of the convention attendees enjoyed a fundraising event for Pilot International Foundation held at the newlyopened Georgia Aquarium, the world' largest facility of its kind. Proceeds from the event, held on Saturday, July 22, and a silent auction went to support the work of Pilot International Foundation to increase awareness of brain injury and brain injury prevention. Convention attendees also took part in a banquet and installation of Pilot International officers for 200607. Cindy Weaver of the Pilot Club of Elberton was the outgoing International president and Bobbie Hudson of Danville, Va., was welcomed as President of Pilot International, 2006-07. Guest speakers included speaker and author, Brian Biro; educational consultant Toody Byrd; and business etiquette coach, Anne Whitaker. Members of Anchor Clubs, the youth division of Pilot International, took part in an on-site service project during the convention collecting basic toiletry items for clients of homeless, women's and children's shelters in their host city of Atlanta. Anchor members also participated in workshops addressing youth leadership and volunteer issues. Founded in 1921, Pilot International is a human service organization of volunteers working together to improve the quality of life in communities throughout the world. The organization's service focus is helping persons with brain-related disorders and disabilities through education, volunteerism and financial support. The Pilot International Foundation awards thousands of dollars annually in grants and scholarships to further education, research and programs that benefit those affected by neurological diseases and injuries to the brain. The Pilot Club of Washington, Inc. presents a puppet show to grammar school children each year called Brainminders. This program reminds children of various ways to protect their brain from injuries such as wearing helmets when riding bikes and skateboarding. The Club presents $1000 worth of helmets to the schools to give the children. They also presented various scholarships to students graduating from high school in the community to further their education.
