Storms and football practice couldn't stop JUMP kids from enjoying jump in the pool
By AMETHYST WYNN

A little summer storm didn't keep Wilkes County mentors, students, and volunteers from enjoying last week's pool party at the home of Sam and Dawn Moore.
The Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP) August monthly activity for students, mentors, and volunteers was sponsored by Sam and Dawn Moore, and Joshua and Caleb Saggus at their home on Tignall Road last Thursday evening.

Sam Moore, Chairman of the Wilkes County Commission, extended an invitation to his home to the JUMP family when he attended the January 2006 "Thank Your Mentor and Volunteer Day" Banquet.

Even though it happened that many of the JUMP students were at football practice and preparing for the first day of school, eight did attend, along with eight mentors and volunteers. EMS Director Blake Thompson was also on hand for any medical emergencies. Mr. Moore extended the initial welcome; and, Mrs. Moore, a 1st grade teacher, welcomed the group after she arrived from the primary school open house.

The kids jumped, dived, swam, splashed, and floated with the colorful tubes and other swimming devices. Joshua and Caleb joined them in a pool version of volley ball, and other water games. Caleb brought their pet pup, "Buster" out to display his fanciful run around the pool, and his skilled diving from the board and the sides. "The children had big fun, to say the least.

Wilkes County Community Partnership Executive Director Carolyn Reynolds attended the party and said, "We are thankful when groups and individuals partner with us to provide important opportunities for our youth. We really appreciate Sam, Dawn, Joshua, and Caleb for hosting this fun event. This is just the kind of cooperation we need from the great citizens of Washington Wilkes to enhance and sustain the mentoring program."

Mr. and Mrs. Moore provided and prepared refreshments. Akeimos Coleman delivered a special "thankyou" address. After a blessing, everyone gathered in the courtyard to enjoy charcoal grilled hot dogs, chips, cookies, soft drinks, and juices.

The Wilkes County Community Partnership (WCCP) is one of the most successful community-based collaboratives in Georgia. WCCP membership is made up of numerous partners; and WCCP sponsors several different programs and initiatives, such as the After School Tutorial and Recreational (ASTAR) Program and JUMP. Being a JUMP mentor is not just

about "giving something back to your community." Most mentors end up saying "I get back so much more than I give." As a mentor you are simply a friend. JUMP ensures that your friendship fits your lifestyle. The program is designed to establish one-to-one mentoring relationships, so busy adults of all ages can get involved. We will guide your involvement in a way that works best for you. To become mentor or event sponsor, please contact Amethyst Wynn at 706-6784981.
