Wallace Wheatley killed in accident Saturday morning

WHEATLEY
A tragic accident in Metasville Saturday morning took the life of a well-known member of the Wilkes County community.

Wallace Wheatley, 56, was killed in an accident just before 11 a.m. Saturday when large pine tree fell on him at the family farm.

He and his brother, Herman Wheatley, and his father, George, were working together to bring the tree down, Sheriff's Investigator Jimmy Harrison said. Wallace was manning a tractor to guide the falling tree with a chain when the top of the tree fell straight on the tractor. "It looks like the chain was just too short for the tree. It was just a miscalculation, a tragic one."

Wilkes County EMS Director Blake Thompson said that he pronounced Wheatley dead at the scene. The Washington-Wilkes Fire Department rescue unit and first responders from Metasville also responded to the accident.

A self-employed farmer, Wheatley is survived by his wife, JoAnn; sons Lenny and Bruce; parents George and Sara Wheatley; and a grandchild, Mason. Further obituary information is on page 2A of today's News-Reporter.
