Edward B. Pope Jr. declares candidacy for City Council seat

EDWARD B. POPE JR.
Just minutes after the announcement was made that City Councilman Anna Norman had resigned her position and that a special election would be held to fill the vacancy, Edward B. Pope Jr. declared his candidacy for the seat.

Pope was in attendance at Monday's Council meeting and had planned to make his announcement as part of the meeting. But the opportunity for public statements did not arise so he elected to tell a few interested persons after the meeting and to make this announcement in the newspaper.

"I just want to serve Wilkes County," Pope said of his reasons for seeking the post. "I have no agenda nor anything I want to change," he continued. "Wilkes County has been good to me and I feel that I want to give something back."

Pope was born and raised in Washington and is a 1964 graduate of Washington-Wilkes High School. He furthered his education at GMC in Milledgeville for two years before joining the United States Navy for a four-year tour.

Pope served as human resource manager for 33 years at the former SCT Yarns which later became Washington Manufacturing. He is a past president of the Washington Kiwanis Club and is a deacon in the Washington First Baptist Church. He enjoys hunting, woodworking, and farming.

Pope and his wife, Susan, have three grown children; Katherine Gentry, Edward Pope III, and Jenny Thomas; and three grandchildren.
