Whitehall man arrested in shooting; victim shot five times hospitalized A Saturday night shooting in the Whitehall area has left one man in the hospital with five gunshot wounds and another in jail charged with shooting him. Alonzo B. Cade, 47, of Whitehall Street in Washington was arrested in the shooting of Roger Mahoney, 36, of the same address. Cade has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Washington Police report that witnesses say Cade and Mahoney had been arguing earlier Saturday evening. At 11:19 p.m., a call came in to 911 concerning shots fired, and Georgia State Patrol Trooper Brent Marxsen was the first on the scene. He located Mahoney lying on the sidewalk and bleeding from several wounds. Washington Police Lt. Johnny Crookham arrived shortly after, and Mahoney identified Alonzo Cade as the man who shot him. A witness pointed officers to Cade, who was sitting in a chair on the front porch of 134 Whitehall Street. While Wilkes EMS personnel tended to Mahoney's wounds, officers questioned Cade about the location of the weapon. Cade told Marxsen that he had been scared and had thrown the pistol in the field across the street. Officers placed Cade under arrest at that point. Crookham questioned the victim's mother, Christine Mahoney, who was a witness. She said that she had been sitting on the front porch of the home when she heard a gunshot inside the home. When she got up, she saw her son attempting to run out through the front door while Cade was firing at him from behind. The victim, shot twice in the chest, twice in the back, and once in the leg, lay on the sidewalk, while Cade sat down on the front porch. After an extensive search of the area, Corporal Philiph Perkins and his canine partner Boris located the .22 caliber pistol with white grips.
Cade is in custody at the Wilkes County law enforcement center. At press time, Mahoney is in stable condition on a ventilator at MCG in Augusta.
