Willie Crew Funeral services for Rev. Willie Crew, 75, of Washington were held Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at Springfield Baptist Church, Washington. Interment was in the City West Cemetery, Washington. He died August 11. Rev. Crew was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Frank and Helen Crew of Washington. He received his education in the Wilkes County public schools. At the age of 18 he moved to Atlanta and while serving as an usher for the Linden Street CME Church received a call to preach the gospel. He served in the United States Army from July 1951 until April 1955 when he returned to Washington to continue his ministry. While serving on the Newburn Circuit he was assigned to his first church, Shiloh CME Church in Tignall. During his distinguished ministry he served the Butts Circuit, Monticello, Newburn Circuit, Norwood Circuit, Warrenton Circuit, and the Lincoln Circuit. He built three churches during his ministry: Prospect CME Church in Monticello; Mt. Aldred and Stony Grove CME churches in Thomson. Prior to his retirement he completed a major addition to Pleasant Grove CME Church in Lincolnton. He retired from the ministry in 1997. He was employed for 25 years at the Rayle EMC, Washington. Rev. Crew married Mary Pauline Smith of Tignall in 1956 and they had three children: Dwight Crew, Fayetteville, N.C.; Rev. Dwayne Crew, Fort Valley; and Melba Brown, Hopewell, Va.
