W-W Garden Club meets August 10 at Kennedy home

The Washington-Wilkes Garden Club met in the home of Sally Kennedy on Thursday afternoon, August 10.

Mabel Johnson presided and opened with a devotional. She welcomed members back after a summer break and guests, Doris Rhodes and Charlene Rigdon.

Celeste Adams gave the treasurer's report.

Mrs. Johnson continued the meeting by giving a report about the greening of the Gulf Coast after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The club donated money to aid in that project. She also related an article about the rose and the rose garden at the White House in Washington. She noted that peace roses were given to that garden in l945 and at that time the rose was named the National Flower.

Mrs. Johnson's daughter, Emilie Waters, presented the program on drying flowers. She explained several methods for drying flowers and surprised many as she told of drying flowers using the microwave. Mrs. Waters demonstrated flower arranging techniques focusing on country and Victorian settings.

Mrs. Kennedy served delicious refreshments to the guests and members, Louise Harper, Celeste Adams, Faye Durham, Mabel Johnson, Linda Burns, Edna Lamar, Pat Mack, Genevieve Thurmond, Elaine Boiter, Mary Webster and Edna Rhodes.
