The Washington-Wilkes Lady Tigers softball team will open its 2006 season this Friday afternoon when the girls travel to Hartwell for a three-game tournament hosted by the Hart County Bulldogs. The girls will play Hart County first at 3:30 p.m. and then play a second game at 5 p.m. against Cedar Shoals of Athens.

On Saturday, the Tigers will start the day early, still in Hartwell, with a 9 a.m. game against Clarke Central.

The W-W Ladies will spend the rest of the month of August warming up for some stiff region competition beginning in September. Moving back up to Class AA this year, W-W "will be in one of the toughest regions in the state," says head coach Rob Jackson. "Morgan County has won the title

three out of the last four years and both North Oconee and Oglethorpe went deep into the state playoffs last year," Jackson said. The preseason GaSports.com Coaches Poll has Morgan ranked No. 2 in the state with North Oconee not far behind at No. 5.

The good news is that the Tigers lost only two seniors from last year and now have a new, strong senior class of three good athletes. Ace pitcher Lindley Hall, as well as Emily Martin and Ashton Hardin will provide the senior leadership.

The 2006 roster, as reported by Jackson, also includes Jaleesa Hampton, Ashley Burt, Angel Acree, Lindsey Guin, Drenika Gartrell, Gracen Ware, Loni Thomson, Yakira Banks, Taylor Echols, Uniqua Freeman, Ashley West, and Rana Davis.
