SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL It's almost time to kick that old pigskin around again. Now is the time of year when hopes and emotions run high among fans, coaches and, of course, the players themselves. This week we'll preview the Atlantic Coast Conference. ACC (Coastal Division) (1) Miami - With a maturing QB and a very stout defense, the Canes are the favorites to win the division. (2) Virginia Tech - The Hokies have a stout stop unit, too, but the offense returns only four starters. (3) Georgia Tech - Seldom does a successful season depend so much on one man, but that is the case with QB Reggie Ball. If he flops, look for the Jackets to slip in the standings. (4) North Carolina - The Tarheels should be improved, but offense and coaching are still suspect. (5) Virginia - Looks like a rebuilding year after losing both coordinators and several key players. (6) Duke - Poor Ted Roof! His team should be improved, but the schedule is formidable. ACC (Atlantic Division) (1) Clemson - On the 25th anniversary of the Nafional Championship season the Tigers have the talent to make it to the ACC Championship game. (2) FSU - Papa Bowden is slipping, but the talent is there. He also gets Clemson and Boston College at home. (3) Boston College - If Coach O'Brien can shore up his defense, the Eagles could make a run at the divisional title. (4) Maryland - Is Friedgen still a genius? Recruiting QB's has not been his strong point at Maryland. (5) N.C. State - The Wolfpack lost 11 starters and who is Marcus Stone? He is the QB and if he doesn't lead the offense to lots of points, State may be overwhelmed several times.
(6) Wake Forest - The Deacons could move up the division ladder with 18 starters returning, including 10 on defense.
