Wilkes Co. Cattlemen wins Beef Month award; 'Iron Chef' cook-off here called best promotion

The Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association was recently named the winner of the 2006 Beef Month chapter promotion contest. The contest, sponsored by Georgia's beef producers, is designed to award local chapters "for their efforts in spreading the great news about beef."

"We had a wonderful group of chapters who all did an excellent job of promoting beef," said Julie Watson, coordinator of public relations. "In the end, Wilkes County stood out with their creative and innovative promotions."

The Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association partnered with the restaurant in the newly renovated Fitzpatrick Hotel to hold an "Iron Chef" cook-off. Teams of three cooked their favorite beef recipe for judging. The judges had the

mouthwatering task of choosing between blackened ribeye steak with hoppin' john and grilled marinated London broil over wilted greens. The local radio station provided the entertainment and a beef buffet was enjoyed by all attendees.

"We have always been highly active in promoting beef, but we now seem to have a renewed spirit to be once again competitive at the state level," said Pat Bobo, treasurer and co-chair of beef promotion for the Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association. "We have a great desire to inform and promote our industry in our local area."

In addition to the Iron Chef contest, the local chapter also held beef trivia contest on the radio and gave beef certificates to daily winners.

Other Wilkes County Beef Month activities included a beef month proclamation, news articles in the local paper, distribution of beef recipes, providing hamburgers for farm safety and baseball camps, and a steak lunch for county commissioners and staff.

The Wilkes County chapter will receive a $200 award and be recognized at the Georgia Cattlemen's Association Convention for its efforts.
