New Cubs Club helps primary students make easier transition to new school

New Cubs Club members include Danielle Tate, Lisette Ramirez, Mya Heard, Martha Ramirez, Caitlin Tate and school counselor Fiona Calhoun.
Washington-Wilkes Primary School has established a New Cubs Club to help students new to the primary school adjust to their new surroundings. Moving into a new school among hundreds of strangers can be a frightening experience so Fiona Calhoun, the school counselor, is trying to make the transition an easier one for new students.

Participation in this club lets new students know how special they are to the school and how happy WWPS is to have them, Calhoun said. The club gives new students the opportunity to share feelings with others who are experiencing similar feelings and to begin to establish friendships at the school. The club gives students the opportunity to get to know the school counselor as the person easily accessible if they need anything while at WWPS.

"I explain my role to the children as being the person who is responsible for making sure everyone is happy, behaving, and learning as much as possible," stated Calhoun. "Everyone at W-WPS welcomes all new students as well as familiar faces returning this year!"
