Continuing vandalism frustrates efforts to improve school grounds

The City of Tignall and the North Wilkes Steering Committee (NWSC) are committed to making improvements to the old school grounds so that the citizens of this community will have a place to hold special events as well as the venue for the "I'd Rather Be In Tignall Fall Festival."

Over the last few years, the NWSC has obtained a freezer for the lunchroom, purchased a new refrigerator, a new stove, built a new closet, purchased new tables, had new outlets placed around the lunchroom area, new tiles placed in the ceiling, as well as new wiring for the outside pavilion and new outside lighting.

The city is beginning to have the old gym painted, the pavilions painted and various other improvements. All of this is being brought to the attention of the citizens because we - the City of Tignall and the NWSC - need the help of the community.

Over the last few months, vandals have broken the bulbs in the outside lighting, broken windows in the

agricultural building, the lunchroom, the gym, and most recently broken into the gym by tearing out a panel in the men's restroom area to obtain entry. Why would anyone want to break into the gym? For a push broom, bathroom toiletries, a mop?

Also, after the Homemakers worked so hard to sell chances on quilts, etc., to have their little soup kitchen building improved, vandals broke into the building, broke windows, and vandalized the place.

Now, about that help needed! If you see anyone on the grounds of the old school hanging around for no good reason, please call 911 and report them. Parents in the area, please supervise your children, keep them away from that area unless they are supervised.

Anyone caught vandalizing the area will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We cannot continue to try to make improvements when others - uncaring others - are trying to tear the place apart.

Please help!
