Bonnie Bounds would be a senior at Briarwood Academy this year, but opted for early enrollment at the University of Georgia. She is classified as a freshman and is in the honors program. There are so many students, that there is not enough dormitory space for them so Bonnie is one of many who are in "supplementary housing." Bonnie and two other freshmen are sharing a fifth-floor lounge in Brumby Hall and it turns out they are the envy of some students who are in regular housing. Their room is more spacious than regular rooms and they have the same amenities such as internet and cable that regular students have. Bonnie and her two roommates were featured (in full color) on the front page of the Athens Banner-Herald one day last week. . . She is the daughter of Cindy and Lincoln Bounds; sister of John Bounds; and granddaughter of Hazel Russell.
Norris says that in Washington we have just had .05 of an inch of rain during the past week, but that Sandown has had two inches. Most of that was Sunday afternoon.
Betty and Ed Lane, Wilkes Countians living in Rutherfordton, N.C., usually use the interstate on their trips "home," but on a recent visit, accompanied by their sevenyear old grandson, Jesse Crook of Hickory, N.C., they enjoyed taking the long way on the back roads. Jesse was curious as to why the pine trees were in straight rows. Betty says, "It's a good thing Paw Paw Ed (a forester) was along. Jesse immediately got a lesson in tree planting." . . . Betty also says that while searching on E-Bay for old Georgia post cards she came across a billhead from the Washington Coca-Cola Bottling Co. dated January 4, 1923. It had been sent to a Mr. Thaxton of Helena, Ga., for $9.95, a dealer from southern New Jersey.
What happened to all those hurricanes we were supposed to have this year?
"A Gala Affair" on September 16 will "celebrate the lifetime achievements of a servant of God, Rev. G.L. Avery." Rev. Avery will be recognized for the many contributions he has made toward the social, political, and spiritual lives in communities all over Georgia. The gala affair will be held in the Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School Cafeteria. I don't know of any other Wilkes Countian more deserving of this recognition. You can call 706-678-4694 or read The News-Reporter for more information.

We've got another Monday holiday coming up. We have tried staying open here at The News-Reporter on Monday holidays because we need the time to get the paper done on time. But we have found that everybody thinks we're closed and they don't come in with news and advertisements until Tuesday. So we're going to join other businesses and be closed on Labor Day on September 4. This means that we have to have earlier deadlines for submitting news and ads. Deadline for all classified and legal advertisements and society news will be Friday, September 1.
