Jamboree Friday night will let fans, coaches see what '06 Tigers can do

W-W Tiger football coaches Robert Wheeler, Russell Morgan, Robert Usry, Ed Lovvorn, and Chris Mason are still waiting to see who is "going to get the job done" as they prepare for this Friday's jamboree with Elbert County.
On the heels of a much abbreviated preseason practice schedule, the 2006 Washington-Wilkes Tigers will unveil their lineups, talents, and new looks for the first time this Friday, August 25, at Tiger Stadium.

At least to some extent.

The preseason jamboree with Elbert County will give the teams a chance to try out some of their players, formations, and strategies in an effort to make some decisions that the short preseason has made difficult. Some, or even many, starting positions may be decided but, at the same time, the real Tigers will held in check so as not to show all they've got.

"Friday night you are probably not going to see much," Tiger Head Coach Russell Morgan said. "War

ren County doesn't have a scrimmage and they will be there scouting and I'm sure Thomson will send their scouts," he continued. "So you won't see anything fancy Friday night - we're just going to look at our basic stuff and see what we need to work on."

Game time is 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the price of admission is $5 - a dollar less than the regular season price.

"This is really an organized scrimmage more than it is a game," Morgan explained. "The fourth quarter is going to be young kids but other than that it is going to be played pretty much like a regular game except some of the special teams won't be live."

The coach said he thinks things are shaping up okay for the 2006 team but he admits to being a little concerned about depth at certain positions, especially on the offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line, he said, will be very young and the defensive line won't be so much young as just inexperienced.

Having lost the defensive front four - Markeith Wylie, Jerbar Moss, D.J. Gartrell, and Casey Nickels - to graduation, Morgan looks for some new Tigers to step up and tow the line. "We have a slew of them we're going to be rotating until we can find the one that can get it done," he said and he mentioned Dan Wylie, Khiry Tutt, Tyreece Ashmore, Brandon Howard, and Jaron Walton as good possibilities.

The coach indicated that the Tiger offense may look a little different this year. He admits that his skill people are his strong point but is a bit concerned that there isn't a strong fullback returning.

"Hopefully on offense we will be spread out and a little more open this year because we do have better skill people," he said. "But you won't see any of that on Friday and depending on how the Warren County game goes, you may not see it then."

The skill at running back includes, of course, Kelmetrius Wylie, Jareon Small, and Demont Gresham, who was also last year's leading receiver until he was sidelined with a knee injury.

"We did lose our fullbacks and that's the reason we may be a little more open this year," Morgan continued. "At receiver we will have Calvin Wynn and a couple of seniors that haven't played before - Larry Davis and Patrell Turman will see some playing time."

But the offensive and defensive lines are the big question mark. "We will see if they can hold out," Morgan said.

The coach said that reserve seat season tickets are still on sale and will be until the Warren County game on September 1. The trick is finding Morgan at an available time. He said he'll be happy to accommodate anyone wishing to purchase tickets if fans "will just let me know, whenever they can catch me."
