JUMP kids enjoy water slide, other fun at Wilkes AME churches community fun day

JUMP kids enjoyed a water slide set up by the Washington Fire Department, and Devarius Smith and Kaleb Smith tried to hold a fire hose with fire fighters Eric Newman and David Wilson.
Over 50 youth and adults attended a Community Fun Day recently for the Wilkes County Community Partnership - JUMP (Juvenile Mentoring Program) family and friends.

Sponsored by Reverend James L. Lawson, pastor, and the Wilkes A.M.E. Circuit of Churches, Jackson Chapel and Black Rock, the outing was designed to provide the kids with a fun event and also reach them with a bit of love, care, and wisdom.

The Washington-Wilkes Fire Department set up a water slide for the children, which was the highlight of the Fun Day, and the fire fighters gave hands-on demonstrations of their equipment.

Amethyst Wynn, JUMP Coordinator, encouraged the children to stay in school and do their best; and she thanked the sponsors and participants.

Grilled hotdogs, chips, cookies, and soft drinks were served for lunch and "back-to-school" packets were presented to the youth.

Dorothy Jordan, youth development/ wellness coordinator, provided bottled water and presented information on the benefits of drinking water.

Lieutenant Robert Roca of the Washington Police Department encouraged the children to avoid negative involvement with the legal system, and the importance of pursuing and education.

Wilkes County EMS Director Blake Thompson was on hand to do health checks and talk about emergency services.
