Present cram course on scam artists
Jeff Warrenfells (left) and David Tatum, assistant vice president/security officer and executive vice president, respectively, of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Washington, discussed current banking security issues with members of the Washington Kiwanis Club at their regular meeting on Tuesday, August 29. Counterfeit cashier checks, bogus deposit slips, bogus payroll checks, and bogus lottery winner checks were among the topics of discussion. Individuals were cautioned not to respond to telephone, email, or written requests for account verification information because scam artists, using computers and high resolution color printers, can replicate the magnetic ink character recognition code (bar code) and make bogus checks to withdraw funds. Warrenfells was program host for the day.
