Eleven Wilkes scholars receive $35,000 from Watson-Brown As college classes begin for the fall semester, 11 students from Wilkes County received a boost in financial assistance. The WatsonBrown Foundation, Inc., awarded nearly $1.4 million in college scholarships to over 400 students in Georgia and South Carolina for the 20062007 academic year. $35,000 was committed to students from Wilkes County. "The academic prowess of this year's recipients far exceeded the expectations of our scholarship committee," said Sarah Katherine McNeil, Director of Scholarships and Alumni Relations for WatsonBrown. "Specifically, the Foundation has received more qualified applicants from Wilkes County this year, and we will continue to award scholarships to deserving students in the area." Watson-Brown Foundation Scholars attend a wide variety of colleges and universities across the nation. The top five institutions represented are the University of Georgia, Furman University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Augusta State University, and Wofford College. Scholarship recipients attend 90 other institutions including Rice University, Duke University, Harvard, Mercer University, Agnes Scott College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Vanderbilt University among others. Wilkes County students receiving the Watson-Brown scholarships for the first time are Joseph Baldwin, Trista Black, Thorne Brown, Quinnetta Cofer, Morgan Lamon, and Casey Nickels. Receiving renewal scholarships are James Atwood, Laura Baldwin, Jenni Holes, Daniel Newsome, and Adam Russell. Based on merit and need, individual annual scholarships of $3000 and $5000 are awarded. Scholarships are renewable each year based on continued academic success. Undergraduate students from Georgia and South Carolina may be considered for the scholarship, however, priority is given to applicants from the CSRA. Scholarship applications will be available online at www.watson-brown.org by October 1. The deadline for the 2007-2008 academic year is February 15, 2007.
Watson-Brown Foundation, Inc. was established in 1970 by the late Walter J. Brown primarily as a college scholarship program. WatsonBrown is among Georgia's largest private foundations, with annual giving totaling more than $6 million. In addition to its scholarship program, the Watson-Brown Foundation also operates three historic sites and house museums and maintains a grant program that funds historic preservation and programs in the humanities.
