Thanks to all the churches of the Georgia Baptist Association for your part in collecting items for the Georgia Baptist Children's Homes. There was good attendance Saturday morning at the Mission Center to welcome the ones coming from the home in Palmetto. There were nine teenage girls who came with several leaders to pick up items (mostly school supplies) which were greatly appreciated. The trip seemed to have been an enjoyable one. Lunch was enjoyed also by all attending. Special thanks again for your part in bringing smiles to them, and to the cooks for the good warm meal. Churches of the Georgia Baptist Association are encouraged to take part in a special offering for state missions coming up in the month of September. The October mission project of the Association will be collecting paper products for Penfield Christian Home, and the beginning of our shoe boxes for Samaritan Purse. The shoe box project was started by Billy Graham's son Franklin for needy children. This has been a successful WMU project in our Association. More on these projects later. Friends and relatives of Joe Swann of Brunswick were sorry to learn of his death during the weekend. He grew up at Phillips Mill, an uncle of Irvin Swann and the late Guy Power of Phillips Mill. Several of his nieces and nephews from Greene County left Monday morning to go to Brunswick to be with his family and attend the funeral Tuesday. Mr. Joe was the last one of his family. I hope to write a piece about him and his large family growing up in our area soon with some help, of course. They touched many lives. Mr. and Mrs. Dan McAvoy and Jerry McAvoy continue to appreciate all the prayers and loving concern. People have been sweet to call to check on them and to stop by. Among visitors have been Gloria Hardy, Dorothy Ann and Jimmy Saxon, Donnie and Claudia McAvoy. Among long distance calls was one from Joe Swann just a few days before he died. A longtime family friend, his brother, the late Earl Swann, married Mrs. McAvoy's sister, the late Mattie Nunn Swann, who were parents of William "Billy" Swann of Bethesda Baptist Church of Union Point. I encourage friends who call to please try to keep your visit to a few minutes at a time. Sometimes their children have a hard time calling home. They love everyone. Priscilla Maxwell represented Phillips Mill Baptist Church Tuesday night at the Georgia Baptist Association executive committee meeting held at the Mission Center. Morrison was among visitors, as he had to carry me. I had the cast on my right arm taken off Friday but I won't be able to drive or use it much yet. I go back to the bone doctor in two weeks. Please continue to pray for us and our daughter Mary Jane and her nine-year-old son Tyler who have had to have a lot of patience along with their willing hearts helping in extra ways. Son Lee, who lives in Atlanta and works with people who have mental problems, is good to check in and help out how he can. Mary Jane continues to work at the University of Georgia where she has responsibilities to take care of. She hasn't pulled her hair out yet (ha). Her effort and patience are priceless to me. We plan to continue to think of the little train: "I think I can, I think I can," praising the good Lord for all his goodness and encouragement His Word provides. God has blessed Morrison to be able to get in second gear this summer. Our children treated us with lunch at Shoney's in Athens Sunday after church to celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary and my 71st birthday. Among their gifts was a book for grandparents. I hope you are having a good day and can pass it on. God loves you.
