Tommy Garrett guest of honor at 50 year celebration on August 26

Tommy Garrett displays his unique cake at his celebration.
Tommy Garrett was honored for 50 years of hardware service to the community at an all-day celebration at Poss-Ace Hardware on Saturday, August 26.

Mr. Garrett began at Poss's at the age of 20 on August, 26, l956, under the leadership of owners, Virgil and Julia Nell Poss. He continued in this capacity until he purchased the business from the Posses in August of l988, continuing the high quality of service the people of Washington-Wilkes and surrounding areas always enjoyed.

The celebration was spearheaded by Mrs. Poss who was assisted by Poss-Ace Hardware employee, Melissa Shelton, and Mr. Garrett's daughter, Julia Anne Garrett Holley.

For the occasion tables were covered in white and decorated with a large bouquet of colorful red Gerber daisies, hypericum berries, lisianthus, red roses, solidago, deep blue Dutch iris, yellow sunflowers, and bells of Ireland. These were a special gift from Tabor and Company.

Others flowers from friends and well-wishers were used about the store. In addition, he received a special bouquet from his granddaughters, Ashlyn and Alyssa Holley. Those dropping by to congratulate Mr. Garrett and to shop were invited to enjoy sodas, nuts, cheese straws, cookies and other party snacks. In addition they were served a piece of his congratulatory cake. The unique design was a large sheet cake decorated as the front page of The News- Reporter, an EXTRA edition noting his 50 years of service.

A humorous moment was enjoyed as Mr. Garrett was honored with a "special presentation" of a goldsprayed hammer with an engraved plaque from John Reynolds, sales representative of Hammer Head tools and long-time friend. Mr. Garrett on many occasions teased Mr. Reynolds about his tools.

"I want to thank everyone for coming," Garrett said. "It was a special day and I thank everyone for making my 50-year celebration in the hardware business a memorable occasion.

Nearly 200 guests from Washington and surrounding areas dropped by during the day.
