It was a reflective evening that brought laughter and tears of joy from the members of the Washington High School Class of l956, the last class to graduate from Washington High School on North Alexander Avenue, as they gathered for their 50th year class reunion and barbecue at the Washington VFW Saturday, August 19.

Forty-nine seniors were pictured in the l956 Tiger Annual. For this 2006 reunion, 31 of the 39 surviving seniors were joined by spouses, former Tiger classmates, retired faculty and family members for a late afternoon and early evening of camaraderie.

At the entrance a display table covered with a white linen cloth, decorated with greenery and lighted by blue and gold votives, held an array of Washington High School memorabilia that included the l956 class graduation picture and a handcolored photograph of the l955 football team. The reception and dining areas were also decorated in blue and gold with Tiger memorabilia from l956 to the present.

Dining tables with white linens topped with blue and gold overlays were each centered with a cobalt blue vase that held a large yellow Gerber daisy accented with tree fern and surrounded by smilax and tea lights. Blue and gold placemats and utensils festively wrapped in blue and gold napkins tied with matching ribbon marked each seat. The buffet table was also covered in blue and gold and centered with a large tiger statue encircled with smilax and six blue vases of tree fern and Gerber daisies. The appetizer, dessert and coffee tables were similarly decorated and lighted with pedestal cobalt blue candleholders and blue and gold votives.

A special memory table draped in blue and yellow linens held a sleeping tiger nestled in greenery under a gold-framed display of the senior pictures of the 10 deceased class members. Ten candles, one for each, burned at the base of the easel.

As class members and guests arrived at the reunion, they were greeted by Louis Echols, son of the late Betty Stevens Echols, and Donna Bennett, Sabrina Bennett and Amy Bennett Long, daughtersin law and daughter of Joe Bennett Jr. Each person was presented a nametag and asked to pose for photos. Graduates received gold name tags sporting his or her senior picture matted in blue with blue and gold streamers. Former faculty and classmates were given gold nametags matted in blue and guests received nametags in gold.

Members of the reunion planning committee, Mona Drake Jones, Mary Ann Garrard, Vivian Ficklen Barnett, Martha Jackson Hopkins, Gene Blackmon and Joe Bennett, welcomed their former classmates and guests.

During the social hour, all enjoyed nuts, cheese straws, pretzels and lemonade as they were treated to a slideshow of black and white pictures from their school days followed by a color slideshow of 2006 pictures taken as guests arrived.

Following the reunion photo of the Class of l956, a nostalgic program of 50s music was presented by the very talented singer and Washington Wilkes Middle School teacher, Debbie McLeod.

At the dinner hour, l956 Class President David Boyd of Newnan formally welcomed everyone. Martha Jackson Hopkins of Washington introduced special guests - retired math teacher, Edna Lamar of Tignall and Coach Charlie Davidson and wife, Vicky, of Rome. Peter Hoffmann of North Augusta, S.C., gave the invocation and blessing.

After dinner Mary Ann Garrard, Class of l956 treasurer and reunion treasurer, read notes she had received from former classmates who were unable to attend. Several graduates and guests offered comments and shared humorous stories. The evening concluded with a second 50s performance by Mrs. McLeod.

Seventy-five attended the gathering.

To commemorate the 50th reunion, each class member will receive a copy of the slideshow and an updated directory of names and addresses along with the 2006 class reunion picture.

The Class of l956 and reunion steering committee noted the contributions of time, effort and memorabilia from Nobie Keener, Vicki Harvey, Donna Bennett, Sabrina Bennett, Amy Bennett Long, Louis Echols, Jack Newsome Jr., Debbie Wells, Dawn Pickens, Bo Standridge, Sue Justus, Carolyn Barnes, Debbie McLeod, Joyce Williams and Debbie Bennett.
