Cross-country teams compete; boys win big

The Washington-Wilkes Tiger boys Cross-Country team eclipsed both of its opponents in the 2006 season opener last week with three runners finishing in the top five spots against Madison County and Jackson County. The meet was held Tuesday, August 22, and also included a pair of runners on the WW girls team.

The varsity girls' race featured 17 total runners, two of whom were Tigers. Ricola Patterson, in her first cross-country event ever, finished fourth with a time of 29:28 on the 3.1-mile course. Shaquanna Spence also ran representing the Tigers.

The varsity boys' race had 27 runners. The top five runners from each school determined the team score for the team winner. Ian Coe who finished second with a time of 20:16 and Taylor Echols in third place with a time of 20:58 led the Tigers. The other Tigers contributing to the team score were James Cade finishing fifth with a time of 21:41, Tyson Gilland finishing eighth at 22:17, and Evan Harrison finishing eleventh at 23:10. The Tigers were the team winners with a score of 29 compared to Jackson County with 51 and Madison County with 55. Other Tiger runners included Ryen Scarboro, 12th at 23:15; John Lovvorn, 13th at 23:22; Jacob Davis, 15th at 24:14; Jesse Crago, 18th at 25:00; and also Rodrigo Rodriquez and Josh Cosby.

The next meet, scheduled for Wednesday, August 30, on the WWCHS campus, was incomplete as of press time for this issue..Some 200 runners representing seven schools were expected to participate. Details will be reported as they are made available.
