William Lloyd Johnson Jr. Funeral services for William Lloyd Johnson Jr., 83, of Stone Mountain, formerly of Aiken, S.C., were held Tuesday, September 5, 2006, in the First Baptist Church, Washington, with Dr. Henry L. Chennault and Dr. Bob Browning officiating. Interment was in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. He died Thursday, August 31, at his home in Stone Mountain. Mr. Johnson was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late William Lloyd Johnson and the late Sarah Arnold Sims Johnson. He was the Valedictorian of his Washington High School graduating class. He played football, ran track, and was a member of the high school band and glee club. He played and sang in Washington's All-State Band and Glee Club. He attended Georgia Military Academy where he was a member of the band and graduated summa cum laude. In 1943, he graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He was an ROTC Cadet Captain while at Tech, and received his Masters in Chemical Engineering in 1947 from Georgia Tech. He was a LT JG U.S. Navy and served in the Japanese Occupation where he supervised the destruction and disposal of Japanese weapons, including 52 two-man Japanese suicide submarines. After serving his country in World War II, Mr. Johnson spent four years with Cities Service in Lake Charles, La., designing refinery equipment. Then he spent 33 years with Dupont at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken,S.C. His last assignment was supervising scheduling, accountability, and process oversight of a large chemical plant separating uranium and plutonium. Survivors include his wife, Leticia Ann Drake Johnson of Stone Mountain; two sons, Calvin Drake Johnson of Stone Mountain and William Lloyd Johnson III of Washington; and four grandchildren, Adam David Johnson, William Lloyd Johnson IV, Patricia Ann Johnson, and Robert Edward Johnson. Pallbearers included Adam Johnson, Lloyd Johnson IV, Robert Johnson, Tom Duggan, Lionel Smith, and George Linney Jr.
Hopkins Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
