SUMMER MOVIE REVIEW
Snakes on a Plane
By Daniel Newsome
Hawaii, Nathan Phillips, played by Sean Jones, is taken into protective custody by Neville Flynn (Samuel L. Jackson). They face a seemingly harmless flight to L.A. where Phillips will testify against the crime boss for murder. Little do they know that the plane is filled with venomous snakes from all over the world that are attracted to the pheromone soaked laithes. The movie continues as passengers try to stay alive 30,000 feet in the air as 300 snakes lay siege to the plane.

Most people will judge this movie by the title, and so they should. The simple, ridiculously blunt title suggests exactly what kind of movie Snakes on a Plane really is. If the original title of Pacific Air Flight 121 had held, the movie's outrageous premise would not have been as appreciated. This movie is not to be taken seriously. It was not made as a high quality realistic thriller. I believe that it will quickly become a cult classic.

The fact that it is a "bad movie" is what makes it so good. I went and saw Snakes on a Plane with a bunch of my fraternity brothers hoping that it would be just as bad as it was. We loved it. Everyone in the theater loved it. It is almost a parody of stupid movies of the same genre that attempt to be serious. Anaconda is such a movie. The key to enjoying this movie is to watch it knowing that everything that happens is meant to be terrible.

I gave Snakes on a Plane five Georges.
They made this movie to be outrageous. The acting is not that good, the plot is predictable but the characters are amazing. The characters are introduced as they get on the plane in the beginning of the movie. They develop well over the course of the movie working together to escape the snakes. Most of the characters have very funny quirks that make the movie much funnier. Also, Samuel L. Jackson does a wonderful job just being himself. I don't think that he had to do much acting to fill the part of Neville Flynn.

When all of the characters quirks and personalities collide on a snake filled plane the result is probably the best bad movie ever made. I think that Snakes on a Plane accomplished its goal to be an outrageous bad disaster movie perfectly. It is definitely a movie to be seen with an open mind and an appreciation for parody.

MPAA Rating: R for strong violence, language and some sexual content.
