DOT to fix deadly intersection; Hwys 44 & 22 get 4-way stop State Representative Mickey Channell announced at the meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club Tuesday that the Georgia Department of Transportation will soon begin working on improvements to the intersection of Georgia Highway 22 and Georgia Highway 44. The intersection has been the site of 12 deaths in the past 15 years, and countless other accidents have occurred at this busy crossroads. "I am pleased to see that the Georgia Department of Transportation is taking steps to improve safety at this intersection," Channell said. "My condolences go out to the families that recently lost loved ones in an accident at this intersection, and it is my hope that the DOT's action helps to prevent future accidents and loss of life." The Department of Transportation plans on making the intersection a four-way stop, and a flasher will be installed along with the new stop signs. The scheduled completion date for the project is September 22.
Channell represents the 116th House District which includes part of Wilkes County.
