'Communities of Opportunity' initiative to be introduced at town hall meeting

A new state program to help rural communities gain the tools and resources they need to prosper will be introduced in a town hall meeting in Washington Monday evening October 2 at the Mary Willis Library.

The Communities of Opportunity Initiative is being introduced at town hall meetings across the region by the Georgia Rural Development Council in partnership with the University of Georgia's Fanning Institute, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

The purpose of the meetings, said UGA's Matthew L. Bishop, is to introduce the Communities of Opportunity Initiative, which is designed to "enhance the capacity of rural communities to be more successful - more successful in the sense that communities have the resources and tools necessary for families and businesses to prosper."

At the town hall meeting, Bishop said, speakers will describe how the Rural Council is partnering with communities and other agencies and organizations to create Communities of Opportunity in Georgia.

Public input is invited, he said. "We need your help in making this initiative successful. Public input is greatly needed to gain the necessary perspective from the local level. Please try and attend the town hall meeting."

Meetings are being held from Waynesboro in Burke County to Millen in Jenkins County. A similar town hall meeting will be held in Lincolnton at 6:30 p.m. October 9 at the Lincoln Center.
