Edith Anthony, Hastee Freeze remembered TO THE EDITOR: Washington Wilkes lost another great lady this past week in the passing of Edith Anthony. Mrs. Anthony, Big Mama, Miss Edith, or MeMuff, whichever name one knew her by, raised a generation of Wilkes Countians in the sixties and the early seventies. From the Hastee Freeze she served not only the best food but wisdom, humor, and guidance for not only those kids working for her but for those patrons she loved so well. The customer could "Have it your way" at the Hastee Freeze long before we knew about Burger King. On Friday and Saturday nights the "Freeze" was the place to be ... To see or be seen. One can be certain that the memories of chance meetings, romances, and breakups that occurred there are too numerous to count. The back room of the Freeze was a favorite visiting spot for the law enforcement officers but not because there was trouble but for the food and camaraderie. Mrs. Anthony could handle law enforcement herself. She was not above going outback at night and straightening out those rowdy roosters if needed. I was lucky to be one of her kids from 1967-1973. Kids she taught to add without a calculator, to figure tax, to make change, to take the order , fill it and then serve with a smile. Mrs. Anthony was a master at scheduling; if you wanted to work she would find a time for you whether it was after school, after church, or on weekends from college. I was just one of the many she mentored in the game of life. I am grateful for the lessons learned in her presence.
