All about heart, sportsmanship

TO THE EDITOR:

This was posted by Phil Tanner on the Triple-A Football website after the game on Friday. It is very touching and reinforces for me that here in Washington we may not always have the No. 1 team but we have something just as good. We have heart and sportsmanship!

Both of those things will take a child further in this life than being on the best team in the state.

TERRY ROBERTS Thomson Bulldog folks ...

we pullin' for y'all, win it all!!!

We had us a football game tonight sho-nuff! Not taking nothing away from yall, but if it could happen, it happened tonight to my Tigers, ...good Lord! But don't think for one tiny second I ain't proud of my boys and coaches, 'cause as they say, "sometimes

it just be that way!"

I had a big time on the microphone tonight don't think I didn't, and I meant every kind word that was spoken. Great people across the river, an even better coach.

After the game, my oldest son, Wes, (6 years old) took a football he caught during the game, (at my request) and asked Coach Welsh to sign it. As expected, he did so, but then what came next explained why Coach Welsh is what he is.

Coach Welsh kneeled down, told Wes to listen to him close. As my 6-year-old young'un, who has a passion for football already, looked him straight him the eye, Coach Welsh asked him to always do what's right, and try to be the best at whatever he decided to do, and if he did that, he'd be a great football player. I'm 375 lbs., can't hardly get about at times, and grunt and groan worse than most old folks. But listen here y'all, I could have run through a brick wall after seeing that, it hit right to the core, it told the story, it explained it all, it defined the LEGEND.

No, it won't get him in a top school or make him smarter, and most folks will think it's foolish and some will even think his daddy's crazy for talking about it as if it's some big deal. But on this night, the man hit a coaching milestone, solidified his ranking as one of the all-time greats, was on t.v. and in every newspaper in the state, and was congratulated by every important booster in Thomson history. Yet he still made time and had the patience to sign a 6-year-old's football and try to make a positive influence on a kid that had that has no impact on his future whatsoever. I can deal with that.

Way to go Coach Welsh and team, and you Thomson folk as well. We had a big time and we wish y'all the best of luck! My Tigers will be fine, don't you worry, TAKE CARE!!!!! ROLL TIGERS!!!
