Volunteer drivers needed now for Wilkes Road to Recovery

Summer Garrison from the American Cancer Society and Debbie Anderson, Wilkes County Road to Recovery Coordinator, are asking citizens to meet at the Wills Memorial Hospital Library Friday, September 15, at 1:30 p.m. to signup to be a volunteer driver for Wilkes County patients who need assistance getting to treatment for cancer.

The meeting will take about 15 minutes and persons volunteering are not obligated to any time or days. When a patients needs transportation, the volunteer will be contacted and it will be up to that individual whether or not he is available to make the trip.

Most of the trips are made to Augusta, but there are a few who go to Athens. There is some gasoline reimbursement available for trips to Augusta, and the Society is working on getting assistance for trips to Athens.

In Wilkes County there are currently only four drivers, three of whom work. There are currently seven patients (two new ones this week) who need transportation.

"The hardest part of my job as coordinator is not the scheduling of available drivers," said Debbie Anderson. "The hardest part is having to tell a patient that we cannot find a driver to take them for treatment."

Please attend the meeting and become a volunteer.
