Primary care physicians are core of medical care
By MARVIN GOLDMAN, CEO Wills Memorial Hospital

The current active Wills Memorial Hospital Medical Staff includes (standing, l-r) Beeki N. Kuppuswamy, M.D., David T. Kirk, M.D., Robert J. Williams, M.D.; (sitting) Lester T. Johnston, M.D., Kirk T. Dodson, M.D., Mahesh K. Duggal, M.D.; and not shown, Alphonso W. Hilliard, M.D.
As a preface to beginning a series of articles in next week's News- Reporter about the primary care physicians who serve this area at Wills Memorial Hospital, Marvin Goldman, CEO of the hospital, has written the following statement about Wilkes County's primary care physicians and their service to Wills Memorial Hospital and the community.

Primary care physicians are the very foundation of our entire medical care system.

In order for the basic health care needs of any small rural community to be met, an adequate supply of primary care physicians must be available. Primary care physicians are usually considered to be family practitioners, general internists, and pediatricians.

In other words, these are our frontline doctors we depend upon to care for our most basic "whole person" needs. Too often the specialty and sub-specialty physicians receive the accolades and attention when it is really the hometown "Doc" who is the backbone of our healthcare system.

It can be difficult to attract physicians, usually trained in big cities, and their families to the life style and clinical environments present in small communities. Physician recruitment and retention incentives can often consume large amounts of money in these communities.

We are fortunate in the communities we serve in Wilkes, Lincoln and Taliaferro counties to be blessed with an adequate number of very well-trained primary care physicians. We at Wills Memorial are proud of them and want the community to know more about them.

Starting with next week's News- Reporter and Lincoln Journal, we will be highlighting one member of our medical staff. We invite your attention to this information.
