'Steel Magnolias' sets performance dates, times; will salute Washington Little Theater's 35 years

"Steel Magnolias," the Washington Little Theater's season opener, differs in its performance times from the theater's usual lineup.

There will be an 8 o'clock opening night on Friday, September 29, followed by a 3 o'clock matinee on Saturday, September 30. At 5:30, immediately following this performance, there will be a gala reception, celebrating both the play and the theater's 35th anniversary.

The reception, celebrating the wedding and reception of "Shelby," one of the characters in "Steel Magnolias," will be held at Wisteria Hall on East Robert Toombs Avenue. Patrons may use their cards for the play and the reception.

Because of the Saturday matinee, there will be no Saturday evening performance Saturday, September 30, nor will there be a matinee the afternoon of Sunday, October 1.

The following weekend, "Steel Magnolias" will play on Friday night, October 6, and Saturday night, October 7, at 8 p.m. Then there will be a matinee Sunday afternoon, October 8, at 3 p.m.

All performances are at The Playhouse on North Alexander Avenue in Washington.

Judy Burkham and Jerry Denard are among the cast members that will be appearing in the Washington Little Theater production of Steel Magnolias later this month.
Reservations can be made by calling 706-678-9582. Based on the interest already shown in this production, reservations are advised.

Robert Harling's extraordinary play was written in response to the death of his sister, a diabetic who risked her life to give birth. Their mother donated a kidney to try to

save her daughter's life. It did not work. Harling drew on other Southern women he had known to give his play a funny surface and a tender heart.

Appearing in "Steel Magnolias are Meredith Atwood, Judy Burkham, Jerry Denard, Ginny King, Katy Leverett, Sarah Peacock, and Delaney Russell. Bolton Lunceford is directing, with Joan Baker as Associate Director.
