At this time, let's revisit the National Park Service (NPS) Cumberland Island matter. First, emotions came back of that day. Yes, it was hot. It was a long day. There were gnats. However, after hearing more of the NPS's plan (vehicles on beaches), trams, minibuses, or SUVs, should not be allowed on the beaches. Vehicles could move about the island on the wide trails that exist and not abuse the beautiful seashores. As Ramsey Way (AJC, 9-6-06) so eloquently put it, "Georgia is blessed to have many natural resources, Cumberland Island is one of them." Can you believe this? Thirty-eight of our Senators voted this past week

against making English the official language of America! Real happy to report none were from the State of Georgia. Hopefully our Senators were present for the vote. Do you ever feel like this? "I fought the lawn and the lawn won!" I saw this on a sign out of Athens and just had to share it. Dumpsters no longer reside in the middle of our little town. They were moved to the old school ground area. Of course, other dumpsters are in and around the city limits for your dumping pleasure! People are calling and are very, very pleased they have been moved from the main street area. Another good reason for the move, with regard to that recent article about vandalism around the old school grounds, now there will be more traffic and activity in that area and the culprits will be afraid to hang around and do their dirty deeds for fear of being caught. This has, in a sense, taken care of two problems. Also, give us time to improve the school ground dumpster area. We plan to place more lighting around the dumpsters for your safety. Also, we'd like to place a buffer of some sort (maybe shrubbery, fence, etc.) in front of them at a later time. Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur (Ouida) Maney traveled to Columbus, MS, for Ouida's family reunion. The Brackin family met at a pavilion on the lake in Columbus. Joining the Maneys were their daughter and her husband, Ruth and Dennis Strickland from California; and their grandson, Clay Kidder, and his daughter Dakota from South Carolina. Congratulations to Lacey and Josh Fincher on the birth of their daughter, Jade Olivia, on Friday, September 8. She weighed 7 lbs., 5 oz., and is 19 inches long. The very proud grandparents are Larry and Pam Pullen and Rev. Dale and Kay Fincher. Dale was passing around his brag book at Tignall Baptist Church Sunday. Also, congratulations to J.T. and Marilyn Summerlin on the arrival of their granddaughter, Emma Grace Summerlin, born to Tani and Joe Summerlin of Senoia. When Marilyn told Dale Sunday about her granddaughter being born on September 7 and that she weighed 8 pounds and 11 ounces and was 19 inches long, Dale says there's always somebody who wants to outdo you! Kay Maddox of Martinez, daughter of Edna Blakey, and friend, John Davis of Evans, attended the Rhodes reunion and fly-in in Beulah. They attended church at Tignall Baptist and had a brief visit with Edna before going on to Beulah. We are sorry Edna was not able to attend. Also attending the reunion was Edna's son, Terry Blakey of Martinez. Let's keep Jerry Wilson in our prayers. He is in intensive care at MCG in Augusta. Let's also put Mrs. Marie Bradley in our prayers. She will have had some kind of procedure done with her heart on this past Monday. We are sorry to hear that Charlene Anderson broke her leg last week. She was out walking her dogs when she miss-stepped and fell. She is to have surgery sometime this week. Kay and Alex Tyler attended the football game in Jefferson Saturday in which their grandson, Jordan Tyler, played. They won the game by one point. I understand Jordan is a very talented football player. Ralph and Mary Will Denard went camping at Yonah Mountain Campground from Friday until Tuesday of last week. They went to Tallulah Falls and saw the play His Last Days. Brad and Kaitlyn Denard joined them at the campground and stayed over Labor Day weekend. They went to the water park in Helen Sunday afternoon. Tony and Marion Hammond attended family day and graduation at Fort Jackson, S.C., for their nephew, Cody Hammond, originally of Clarks Hill, S.C. This ceremony which took place at Hilton Field was for the First Battalion, 61st Infantry Regiment Basic Combat Training. Family Day was on Thursday and graduation was last Friday. There were 1350 boys graduating. Cody was in basic training at Fort Jackson for nine weeks and he reported to Fort Gordon on Saturday where he will be in a training period for 16 weeks. After the graduation ceremony, Tony and Marion, went on to Tybee Island and stayed until Sunday. Donald and Peggy Ware went to North Georgia near Lake Burton and spent a long Labor Day weekend from Thursday through Monday at a cabin that belonged to a cousin. Layton and Gloria Harris have been camping for a week at the Lakewood Camping Resort at Myrtle Beach. Joining them for this camping trip were their camping buddies, Dot and Bill McCord, Bonnie and Bobby Land, and Patsy and Larry Peterson, all of Thomson. Joining the group Friday of last week were Robbie and Curtis Tanner of Washington; Estelle and Jeff Davis of Catawba, S.C.; Mary and Jim Belk and Shirley Garrett of Lancaster, S.C. They spent the week shopping, dining and just relaxing. The weather was very pleasant. Nonie and John Yochim had a birthday dinner for their son-in-law, David McAvoy, on Sunday. Those joining them for dinner were David and Michelle McAvoy and Charlie, Trey McAvoy, Morgan and Tim Echols, Phoebe, Blake, and Aubrey Davis, Kathy Robertson of Dacula, Jessica and Jim Turner of North Dakota, and Vivian and Louie Wolozin. On Labor Day, Rick and Laura Standard of Hull came to Almond Standard's cabin and brought chickens to barbecue. Joining Almond, Rick, and Laura for the day were Christine Burton, Larry and Pam Pullen, Josh and Lacey Fincher, and Dale, Kay, and Julie Fincher. Wilkes County Baptist Church will be having homecoming on Sunday, September 17, with special singing at 10:30. Gordon Combs of Franklin will be the guest speaker. Pastor Butch Jackson and the congregation invite all former members and friends to attend this service.
