Wilkes Board of Education looks at new traffic patterns for buses, cars
By KIP BURKE

In its regular September meeting, the Wilkes County Board of Education discussed bus traffic problems at the high school, renewed the county's contract with RESA, and discussed the board's goals for the superintendent's evaluations.

The conflict between bus traffic auto traffic at the front entrance to the high school and middle school had been brought up before, and Superintendent Joyce Williams said that she and Transportation Director James Callaway watched the traffic and toured the school recently to look at possibilities to alleviate the problem.

"We have a possible way to separate the bus traffic from the car traffic entirely, routing the buses around the school and out the back gate," she said. They also looked at routing student traffic through Norman Street, leaving the Hospital Drive gate free for pick-up and drop-off traffic.

The board will need to discuss the subject further and look at the costs involved in the changes, Williams said.

Superintendent Williams also asked board members to schedule a date for a construction meeting to review what has been done and look at options for future construction. A meeting was scheduled for September 27 .

The board also voted to approve the state-mandated RESA contract after some discussion of different aspects of what RESA provided for the county. The RESA contract was some $10,000 less this year than last, Williams said.

Board Chairman Ricky Callaway discussed a set of definitive goals that the board had set for the superintendent at the time of her hiring, and passed out a list of goals and indicators to board members.

"We're very pleased with Mrs. Williams," he said, "and this doesn't mean that she hasn't been doing these things, it's just that they're important to the board and we want to track our progress on these goals."

The goals included thorough and complete communications with board members over school issues; recruiting and hiring the best available teachers; keeping system-wide inventory information available to board members; improving the budget process to keep up with the county and state requirements; and improving the school system's communication with the public about school issues and activities.

Callaway opened bids for emergency lighting to be installed at Tiger Field as is expected to be required by the fire marshal. The low bidder was Denard Electrical, at $12,987, and the board voted to accept the bid.

In other business, the board also approved W-WCHS principal Andrew Jackson's request to allow the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to attend the "Rally in the Valley" at Clemson, S.C.; and for the Tiger Band to go to a band competition in Midland Valley, S.C.

Callaway also appointed board member Kay Finnell as the board's legislative liaison to the Georgia School Board Association and members discussed the upcoming GSBA conference.

The board also heard the first reading of three policy revisions concerning student records, student behavior codes, and student welfare.

In an executive session for personnel, Shalanda Ashmore was selected as a parapro for the alternative school, and Samuel Lee Binns was selected as a substitute bus driver.
