Black Sheep Squadron remembered
Michael Horgan presented a program about the famous World War II Marine Fighter Squadron known as the Black Sheep Squadron at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, September 19. Horgan presented anecotes, statistics, and pictures of the success of VMF214 (Vertical Marine Fighter) formed in August 1943 and led by Lt. Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. VMF-214, named the Black Sheep Squadron, flew the F4U Cutlass, the famous gull winged fighter built by ChanceVought. Flying out of Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, the squadron is credited with 203 planes destroyed (97 in air-to-air combat) and produced eight fighter aces. Louise Maynard was program host for the day.
