FCS Advisory Committee meets Sept. 12 at W-WCHS

The W-WCHS Family and Consumer Science Advisory Committee met Tuesday, September 12, 2006, in Sheila Callaway's lab at the high school.

Those present were FCS teacher Sheila Callaway, W-W Primary School teacher Sandra Gammon, Chris Townsend from the First Baptist Church Preschool, Kelly Wilson (W-WCHS Parent), Kirby Wilson (W-WCHS Student), and CTAE Supervisor Lou Bentley. Principal Andrew Jackson was unable to attend because of a prior commitment.

Callaway thanked everyone for attending and gave an overview of the Family and Consumer Science Program at W-WCHS with an emphasis on the Early Childhood Education component. Bentley discussed the importance of the advisory committee and thanked those in attendance for their willingness to serve.

The committee discussed the importance of the ECE program to the community. Committee members complimented Callaway on her students and her program. As the committee entered into a question/answer session, several excellent suggestions were made for program improvement.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares students for family life, work life, and careers in Family and Consumer Sciences. It provides opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that students need to become responsible citizens and leaders in family, community, and work settings; to manage resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families; to promote optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span; and to accept responsibility for their actions and success in family and work life.

In addition to classroom/ laboratory instruction, which develops the academic and technical knowledge and skills requisite for home and family life, further education, and employment, the Family and Consumer Sciences program also includes participation in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) vocational student organization. FCCLA provides an array of activities to enhance student academic and technical competencies and develop leadership and communication skills.
