THE ACADEMIC CORNER
Georgia Performance Standards: The Journey Continues

Washington-Wilkes Middle School is in its third year of transition from the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC) to the new Georgia Performance Standards. The new curriculum will better facilitate student learning and success because students will now have clearer expectations for performance. Students will be able to apply what they have learned in each content area to real life situations. The Georgia Performance Standards also provide teachers with assessments for students that will guide instruction allowing each student to have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways. Each performance standard focuses on four components: the standard, performance tasks, student work , and teacher commentaries.

The content areas are now prioritized so that each grade level is aware of the specific goals that students need to meet during the year. The following information represents some of the changes taking place with the implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards:

English/ Language Arts is divided into four areas: reading, writing, conventions, and a strand for listening, speaking, and viewing. Mathematics will now place a strong importance on problem solving , reasoning, representation, connections, and communication. Science standards will now mandate that objectives are mastered through a variety of ways such as hands on, student centered activities, and inquiry based approaches. The Social Studies standards will enable students to recognize the relevance of the past and how it affects our present and future. Parents are strongly encouraged to visit the website www.georgiastandards.org to receive more specific information on each grade level.
