Civil War Round Table to hear program on 'The Orphan Brigade'

The Civil War Round Table of Washington is honored to have as the guest speaker for the September meeting the distinguished Western Kentucky University professor, Carol Crowe-Carraco, Ph.D. Crowe-Carraco, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, will speak on "The Orphan Brigade."

The meeting will be held in the Fitzpatrick Hotel Restaurant on Monday, the September 25, at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per person and includes dinner.

Dr. Crowe-Carraco received her Ph.D in English History, her M.A. in U.S. and French History, and her A.B. in U.S. History all from the University of Georgia. She was graduated cum laude in history, was Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, and Sigma Delta Pi.

Her numerous publications include "Western Kentucky University: The First 100 Years" in 2006, "Women Who Made a Difference," "Transportation in 19th Century Kentucky," and "History and Folklore in the Public Schools" among others. Two media tapes are also to her credit: "The Civil War in Kentucky's Big Sandy Valley," and "Steamboating on the Sandy."

"The Orphan Brigade was formed in 1861 and fought everywhere of importance in the western theatre and in Georgia from 1863 to 1865. They surrendered in Washington, Georgia," informed Crowe-Carraco. When asked how the Orphan Brigade got its name, she stated that "Once they left Kentucky, they never got back until after The War."

Crowe-Carraco has 36 honoraria to her credit, and currently is researching for a full-length biography of the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service she calls "Cry for the Children: Mary Breckinridge, 1881-1865;"

The Civil War Round Table is open to anyone interested in this period of history. Membership is $15 for students, $25 for individuals, and $35 for families. Dues will be paid at the meeting.
