SUMMER MOVIE REVIEW
Crank
By Daniel Newsome

I gave Crank two Georges.
In the grand tradition of his previous movies such as The Transporter and its sequel, Jason Statham's action sequences are flawless even if a bit over the top.

The fight scenes are not only flawless, they are unique. Statham uses ordinary objects in the environment around him to repel the baddies. In one scene, he uses an emergency fire hose to immobilize over five goons. Similar techniques permeate the rest of the film as Statham fights his way through most of L.A. The rest of the film however, is not so impressive.

This action packed, over-the-top film starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart sports a unique directing and camera style that redeems this film in a way that the plot could never do.

This film is about a hitman, played by Statham, who gets injected with a deadly Chinese poison. This poison is unique in that it inhibits adrenaline and slowly shuts the body down. The only way to slow the process is by keeping the body moving and active. Statham does this for the entire movie. The plot is weak, offering no character development whatsoever.

In the end, as is the mark of any bad movie, I was left having no feelings for any character. The movie was entertaining for almost the entire 80 minutes, an uncommonly short length for a feature film. However entertaining, it is not a movie that I would choose to watch again. One time is definitely enough for this film, considering that the shock value of the perfect fight scenes is its strong suit. And once you've seen a fight one time, it is rather boring the next time.

Crank is a movie that cannot stand up against Statham's other movies that boast the fight scenes and a plot. For the action-loving moviegoer, this movie may be worth your money, but to the average viewer it is just another below-average flick.
