Tigers upset top-ranked Lincoln in 3-0 shutout
By JOHN LOVVORN

HAMPTON AND DEMONT GRESHAM STOP LC The Red Devils never managed to get any points against W-W.
In case there's anyone in Wilkes County who doesn't know, last Friday night the Washington-Wilkes Tigers defeated their neighbors and rivals, the Lincoln County Red Devils, by a score of 3-0, in Lincolnton. This ended Lincoln County's 58game streak of not being shut out. The last time the Red Devils were shut out was in their season opener back in 2002, when the Tigers shutout the Red Devils 22-0 in Lincolnton. Friday's win also gave W-W the lead in the series between the two schools, 32-31-6.

Lincoln County started the game with the football. After returning the opening kickoff to their 21-yard line, the mighty Red Devil offense set to work. It looked at first like Lincoln would march up and down the field on the Tigers, just as they had done against their first two opponents, moving 40 yards in five plays. But then defensive end/linebacker Khiry Tutt broke through the Red Devil's line, tackling Lincoln County running back Rontae Norman for a three-yard-loss. The Red Devil drive would stall after Tutt's stop, with a twelve yard sack by defensive end Dan Wylie on fourth down forcing a turnover-on-downs. WashingtonWilkes went three-and-out on their first drive of the game, punting to Lincoln County after gaining only seven yards. The Tiger defense forced a punt as well, with W-W getting the ball back after a six yard punt return by Jareon Small. The Tigers again couldn't move the ball, punting to the Red Devils right before the end of the quarter.

THE TIGER DEFENSE KEPT LINCOLN IN CHECK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE GAME With a "Bend-but-don't-break" style, Washington-Wilkes stayed tough right to the end.
After having an 18-yard-gain called back for holding, the Red Devils ran a screen for 36 yards, putting them on the W-W 39-yard line two plays into the second quarter. The Tiger defense held again, with Tut forcing a fumble two plays later and linebacker Demont Gresham recovering it. The Tiger offense went three-and-out for the third time in as many possessions, with Lincoln County receiving the punt and returning it to their 32-yard Tigers vs. Lincoln Co.

line. The Red Devils again threatened to score, driving down to the W-W 14-yard line. After Lincoln had a touchdown called back for holding, the Tiger defense forced another fumble. The W-W offense started on their own 25-yard line, and, after an incomplete pass by quarterback Clete Wilson, finally got things started with a 21-yardgain by running back Kelmetrius Wylie. The offense drove down to the Lincoln County 29-yard line with runs from Wilson, Wylie, Moore, and Gresham, where, with two seconds left in the half, kicker Mark Tench attempted a 46-yard field goal. The kick fell short, leaving the score tied at 0-0 at halftime.

W-W started the second half with the football. The drive started off well, with Wylie going 17 yards in three plays, but a holding call gave the Tigers second-and-long, and, after two incomplete passes, they were forced to punt. The Red Devils started their drive on their 28yard line. Slowly but surely, they drove the ball all the way down to the Washington-Wilkes 10-yard line. It was here that the Tiger defense made their most impressive stand of the night. The defense held Lincoln County on the 10-yard line for three plays, with linebacker Trey McCants knocking down a pass in the end zone on third down. However, a controversial pass interference call gave the Red Devils a first down on the five-yard line. The next play would prove to be the "Pontiac game-changing performance." As Lincoln County quarterback Brandon Barden plunged towards the goal line, Washington-Wilkes linebacker Quarica Smith reached out and punched the ball free, where it was recovered by Gresham in the end zone for a touchback. The Tigers ran one play from the Red Devil 20-yard line before the third quarter ended.

W-W punted three plays into the fourth quarter, but the game's momentum was still on the Tigers' side. Lincoln County's offense moved the ball only four yards before being forced to punt. Pressure from the Tigers caused Red Devil quarterback/ punter Barden to fumble the snap, which, even though he recovered it, gave W-W the ball on the Lincoln County 33-yard line. This was the break W-W needed. The Tigers drove down to the 18-yard line, where, with 5:13 left in the game, W-W kicker Tench made the game-winning 35-yard field goal. After the kickoff, the Tiger defense was still fired up, causing the Red Devils to go three-and-out for the second drive in a row. With just over two and a half minutes left in the game, W-W only needed a few first downs to be able to run out the clock. But a fumble by Gresham gave Lincoln County back the football on the Tigers' 45-yard line with two minutes left for a last effort drive. It looked like the game would at least end in a tie, as the Red Devils drove down to the W-W 14-yard line. But the Tiger defense was not about to lose its shut-out. W-W linebacker Gresham made up for his earlier fumble by intercepting a pass intended for Barden in the end zone. The Tigers took-a-knee to run out the clock, sealing the win.

The Tigers put up 112 yards on offense, all on the ground. Wylie was the leading rusher again for WW, with 16 carries for 80 yards. Kicker Tench scored the only points of the game with his 35-yard field goal. Tutt led the Tiger defense with eleven tackles, two tackles-for-loss, a sack, four assists, and a caused fumble. Gresham was next with seven tackles, four assists, two recovered fumbles, and an interception. Linebackers Trey McCants and Dywane Hampton did an excellent job containing Lincoln County's outside running game, and corners Gary Wilburn and Larry Davis made a number of key tackles from the secondary.

This week, the Tigers host the Tigers of Dawson County. Dawson County is one of the favorites to win the North sub-region of region 8AA. Defensively, they base out of a 3-5, and are led by Georgia Tech signee Logan Walls, a 6-2, 275 lb. defenDYWANE sive end. Offensively, Dawson

County runs a no-huddle spread offense and will probably throw the ball 60% of the time. Kickoff for Homecoming 2006 is 7:30 at Tiger Stadium.
