Sole sponsor of essay contest is 'W-W Coalition for Progress' A number of questions have arisen concerning the $1,000 Essay Contest which has been advertised in recent issues of this newspaper. Readers want to know if the contest is for real and who is behind it. The contest is real and the committee behind it, the Washington- Wilkes Coalition for Progress (WWCP), is serious in its intent. That intent is to find fresh, new ideas for progress in Wilkes County while identifying its strengths and weaknesses. It is also to recruit willing participants ready to work toward that progress. Given the need for progress, growth, and economic development here, the W-WCP, is aware of ongoing efforts to come up with ideas and solutions. However, according to the committee, there may be a number of people with good ideas who don't attend community meetings and who don't have any other means by which to make their opinions known. Hoping that a cash prize will bring them and their ideas out, the committee launched the essay contest. There are almost no rules for entry and anyone of any age may enter. There are no exclusions. However, the W-WCP strongly urges the participation of high school students. Entries are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, one week from today. Essays should answer the following four questions: 1. What do you think is right about Washington-Wilkes? 2. What do you think is wrong with Washington-Wilkes? 3. How could it be fixed? 4. How would you participate in the fixing?
Other details may be found in the advertisement on page 11A of this issue. (The News-Reporter is not affiliated with the W-WCP and is serving only as a drop point for contest entries.)
