Walk of Hope raises funds for local cancer needs; public is invited to join walk at 6 p.m. October 13
By DEBBIE BENNETT

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Annual Nancy Callaway Long Walk of Hope scheduled for Friday evening October 13 on the Square in downtown Washington is the primary fund raiser for Beta Sigma Phi, Eta Omicron Chapter. Mrs. Long was a loved sorority sister who lost her life during her third battle with cancer and this event is dedicated to her memory.

A percentage of funds raised during this cancer walk and drive are sent to the American Cancer Society earmarked for Breast Cancer Research; however unlike other cancer drives, the majority of the proceeds from this event remains in Wilkes County to support local cancer needs through the Cancer Relief Fund organized by cancer survivor, Bunny Boyd, or at Wills Memorial Hospital. With the tremendous rise in gas prices, the sorority has increased its pledge to the Cancer Relief Fund enabling her to continue assisting cancer patients with the increased cost of travel to and from treatments.

The public is invited to join sorority members and walk laps around the Square beginning at 6:00 pm on October 13. Luminaries in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of loved ones who lost their battles may be purchased from Sabrina Bennett, Dawn Pickens, or any sorority member. The luminaries

will be placed around the brick wall and tree in the center of the Square and lit at the end of the Friday evening walk.

The members of Eta Omicron Chapter would greatly appreciate your support in their efforts to provide assistance for local cancer needs through this annual walk and drive that honors the late Nancy Callaway Long.
