THE ACADEMIC CORNER
Technology is Everyday Business at W-WES

Students at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School are actively engaged in the use of computer technology each day they attend school. Each Pre-K, fourth and fifth grade classroom is equipped with a minimum of two computers, with some classrooms housing as many as eight computers. All students Internet access either in the classroom, media center, or in the school's technology lab. Many of the school's computers are wireless laptops.

Washington-Wilkes Elementary School is in its third year of participation in the eMath Grant Program. Mrs. Janet Pharr serves as the eMath Coach at WWES. In this role, she is responsible for training math and science teachers at the school to more effectively implement technology into their daily classroom instruction.

Mrs. Pharr is currently instructing teachers on the new Georgia Performance Standards for mathematics and on the integration of technology into these standards. Fourth grade teacher Mrs. Angela McGill assists Mrs. Pharr in this role.

Students at WWES also use technology as they become more proficient in their reading and math skills through the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math programs. Accelerated Reader allows students to take computerized reading comprehension tests on media center books and on stories from Scott-Foresman Reading. Accelerated Math provides students with individualized practices on selected mathematics objectives. These two programs are used daily in the school and also

during after school reading and math "camps" provided for students who need additional assistance in order to meet grade level requirements.

Another key component of the technology program at WWES is the twenty-eight station computer lab. Mrs. Barbara Lenon serves as the technology instructor at the school. Mrs. Lenon's expertise in the area of mathematics instruction allows her to guide the children through individualized learning experiences using the Destination Math program. She also instructs the students in keyboarding skills and in the use of the Online Assessment System (OAS) which provides practice opportunities for the CRCT. Destination Math and OAS are both accessible to students at home by use of a password provided by the school.
